I couldn't read your article this time - the song is about daddy dressed up as Santa Claus, which used to be a tradition - mommy was kissing daddy under the mistletoe, but he was dressed as Santa Claus. Please feel okay about this song. // addition - society/media has pushed more and more focus on cheating and negative imagery of women. Please don't add to it. That is an old song and was innocent - mommy was kissing daddy under the mistletoe and a child snuck in and witnessed what wasn't supposed to be witnessed. Daddy was trying to role play Santa Claus. Seriously - please don't add to the nastiness of controlled media about women. - Old song, cute, mommy was kissing daddy.

I genuinely hear you, Jennifer, but my post is satire.

Expand full comment

Satire that can be taken literally - is manifesting something that you may not have intended then. Even if it was a department store Santa - mIstle toe and Christmas is a time for love - a kiss on the cheek under the mistletoe is still innocent and joyful. Your post was not what I needed to see on Christmas Eve. Current media has been extremely abusive to women and wives while males can mass murder and have it written off as a bad day by the media.

Merry Christmas Mickey Z. To me that did not suggest satire. Satire, definition: "the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues:

"the crude satire seems to be directed at the fashionable protest singers of the time""

What is your 'satire' supposed to be exposing or criticizing? Old songs shouldn't have potentially scandelous implications? - it was old, I don't think it was scandalous at the time. Life has become more prudish in many ways, while also very exploitative of women, or some women. Moving on. We all have our own ideas and backgrounds.

A great take on a classic Christmas song. I’d have to admit I have wondered about Mommy and Santa myself in past years. Merry Christmas everyone!

I have to disagree - there was a tradition in the 50s that daddy himself dressed up as Santa Claus and brought in presents in secret - cookies and milk left for him was drunk and eaten. This song is a really old, cute song about a child who happened to catch mommy kissing daddy when he was dressed as Santa. Please don't be negative about women and wives. Media messaging pushes that fairly constantly in current times. It is part of the authoritarian takeover. Break up families and the power of traditional relationships. Pre Romantic poets, cheating happened, it didn't end marriages though, might lead to some broken dishes. The Romantic poets died early with tuberculosis so they never learned that a 40 year marriage has some ups and downs and work to keep going. - Not love at first site and forever after with no turbulence.

I get what you are saying, Jennifer. I never saw anything in the least scatological about a very silly song.

Thanks, I realized later that different versions may give different impressions too. I heard a snippet on the radio and it was a sultry female voice. Not the cutesy version in my faint memory of the song.

Happy holidays to you Susan!

always thought that was not a song to be played out in the open! so many nice songs around and then they play that dragon. I avoid shopping this time of year because of the misuse and abuse of christmas songs (although I am barely christian LOL)

I have fond memories of Christmas Music.

I can imagine, loop reels of the music, for commercial purposes ONLY, could be bothersome.

PBS usually plays Handel's Messiah, which is quite beautiful.

In a world of intense disorder, & un-purposeful hope, I guess Christians lean into it, for succour.

May Peace Surround You Brother.

I don't know your religious beliefs Mickey, & it's none of my business, because ultimately, it is an INTERIOR thing, that only God (or whatever one prefers to call such) SEES.

But I say this, as I have listened to your sweet voice during Your Inter-Views, & Your Kind-Hearted Work, on the streets, of that sometimes tough New City, YOU HAVE THE SPIRIT OF JESUS WITHIN, & bear the willingness, to carry another cross.

As HE said, way back when.

A "follower," in my humble estimation, IN-DEED !

Blessings To Your Work(s) !

Thank you for such profoundly kind words, my friend. And I concur. It's far more essential to embody a philosophy than to talk about it!

I appreciate all your support and wish you peace and warmth.

I tried to send a picture of praying hands, holding a red rose, of desire, TO DO GOOD.

If it didn't show up,

It Is Still There Mickey,

Waiting for You.

Always.

When I was bicycling this morning, my mantra on release of breath was TRANSCEND. This was a gift I was given by [fill in the blank] as a child; I could even transcend my own family. I don't know how people can think they are pursuing a spiritual life without transcendence.

Interesting! If you assume it’s Daddy, it’s a cute, wholesome song. If not, it isn’t, but it was very popular nonetheless, not at all seen as scandalous. I’m inclined to think it was meant to be Daddy, after seeing the comments, and recalling that my Dad did the same. Still, I enjoyed your unique and thought-provoking post, Mickey!
