Too big for the parasites to begin with, not having thought it through the result of their plans are to kill the host to live the life of a railroad hobo. Or something. This plan will fail spectacularly.
Beautiful! Ironically, I think most of us are “different.” You’re writing about the majority, actually. Most people I know and run into on a regular basis have jobs that are never in the category of “what do ya wanna be…” Mailman, garbage collectors, store clerks, small business owners, beauticians, etc.
As a parent, I have only asked my kids, “what jobs do you currently think would suit who you are? A desk job? Solo? With a team? Using your brain? Using your hands?” “Do you want to enjoy the job that pays the bills, or do you want to just have a job and spend free time on your hobbies?” You figure out who you are, then you figure out what you can enjoy or tolerate doing about 5 days a week.

This is personally valuable, thanks Mickey! Parents struggle to do the right thing when they try to guide their kids. Perspective is hard. It's good to have help stepping back a few paces to get a better view.
what a great article. some people are carreer people and some others are almost anti-carreer. That are the artists, the writers, the people who struggle at the fringe of society usually, without any certainty of a next meal. When we look at happiness, I would say most rich people don't even know what that is. Looking at indeginous people, who live their own ways, like African tribes, singing, dancing, they seem to be much happier. Some docs show people that don't know what money is. In a way, I envy them. We are so used to useless things, they live with the absolutely necessary. Friendship, love, animals, growing food. But you can't choose that as a carreer...
Ani D meant a lot to me when I was younger. I collected most of her CD's, sang along with a lot of her songs, saw her at a live show in Minneapolis. Coming from white bread central Minnesota she was a model for how to be different and brilliant about it.
So if you have all these books you've written, why do you not have them available for sale?
That's out of my control. As the publishing model shifted so dramatically, publishers downsized and that often meant marking some books as being "out of print."
To be radically honest, I'm fine with it. I sold a fair amount back in the day and - aside from a couple of the titles - I'm glad my books are left in the past. They mostly passed their own expiration date. The sections that I still like in such books, I sometimes turn into short Substack posts!
P.S. I also go to to see Ani live. At the Beacon Theater here in NYC in perhaps 2004.
Howard Fast survived the blacklist because his books continued to be published all over the world and provided him an income. But he published fiction based on actual events, so there wasn't really an expiration date.
Loved this! Very insightful. It’s such a shame that society ranks and measures, & that children are brought up this way. It’s hard to escape. A strong value of mine is constant, relentless, nurturing, & supportive parenting. Reinforcing values that matter. I started morning conversations when my kids were toddlers, brainstorming about “who can I be kind to today?” And, always, after the first day of school each year, “tell me about how you welcomed the new kids”.
My kids are 26 & 28 now and we laugh that perhaps some of my parenting techniques arose as trauma responses. ( Little do they know!) 😉
Both of my kids live in large cities in the NE US. They have what would be considered impressive jobs with big responsibilities. And yet our conversations often still center around times they have been thoughtful, helpful, or supportive of others. For example, my daughter recently saw a teenager in a wheelchair get off the bus (NYC) by himself and appeared to be struggling with navigating the sidewalk & traffic. She approached him and offered to help as it started to rain. He accepted as she popped an umbrella over them. Turns out he was starting a new school, traveled in from NJ, via 2 busses/trains. He said he had miscalculated the commute, as he’d already spent over an hour en route & he was late. She said she was heading right to his destination anyway (lying can be appropriate). She got him to the front gate & offered to get him to a classroom but he preferred to enter solo & she appreciated that.
She told me about it on the phone, after work, as she was simply recounting her day. It was more of a hey, I got caught in the rain this morning story. No big deal.
I secretly cheered as she hit a two-fer... being helpful AND being a positive part of someone’s first day at a new school!
I’m not sharing all of this to virtue signal (I don’t even know you guys!), but to perhaps inspire someone to make today a better day for someone, and especially a kid.
Oh Celeste! This comment is the furthest thing from virtue signaling! I'd call it leading by example and the story you shared brought tears to my eyes. Almost every minute of every day gifts us with opportunities to be helpful and positive. We just have to get in the habit of recognizing these gifts.
It's wonderful to feel how palpably proud you are of your children and to witness how your intentional choices contributed so mightily to their daily awareness. Thank you, on so many levels!
Celeste, you raised those kids well and I learned from you, too. The story of your daughter helping the new student made my eyes watery! Loved it. Thanks for sharing. There are endless opportunities to be a light in someone's day. -And when it happens to us, it's dazzling. Thanks for pointing this out.
Enlightening and inspirational article. Yale and Harvard now require all returning students to be fully covid "vaccinated" and boostered up. This appalling fact epitomizes the state of 'higher education' in America today---Get your kill-shot, medically useless but known to kill and severely maim millions---if you wish to partake in our wokeist indoctrination and join the ranks of the obedient elite. It's beyond nauseating. I hope all these college administrators are brought to justice someday and rot in prison.
Ah, Gimbels department store. Brings back memories. They had a great stamp department for stamp collectors way back when. Those were the good old days, I guess, the pre-PharmaFascism era...although subsequent to the 1963 coup (JFK murder) which transformed and destroyed the country. The American people's willingness to sit back and do nothing about the televised CIA/Mafia murder of Kennedy in broad daylight set the stage for Americans' complacency to be raped by Big Pharma/US govt. and their media accomplices. People are gradually waking up to the poison that was injected into their bodies, but the harmful health effects will manifest for years to come.
The powers-that-be have wanted to make very sure that nothing like the 1960s occurs again, no teachers or teaching assistants siding with students protesting the status quo. So what do we have teaching at the supposedly elite Berkeley? Judith Butler, a drunken fount of nonsense; Grace Lavery (or as many prefer, Gross Lavatory), a man who puts a photo of his wife online with his fist in her mouth and tells us he's a woman; the torture justifier at the law school; and other such scum of the earth.
Well, DAMN. Applauding over here, 20 years later!!! This is sooo good. I wish I'd heard a speech like this at my own young, academic fork in the road! For context, my guidance counselor encouraged me to compete in Miss Teen PA "...for the scholarship!" she insisted. My bestie (who also got that bizarre "guidance") and I laughed all the way to the cafeteria. Your speech is awesome. Sparked off lotsa memories and even now-moments where I did/do not fit in and probably better for it. "Encore!!" (PS: Gimbel's!!! Yes:)!

Hey Z. !
You're Really SomeOne.
Not a thing.
Like maybe, a circular meat presser.
To be eventually cooked.
HAHA !!
LOVE TO YA.
😇
Highly contemplative.
I cherry picked this: What passes for rebellion is usually co-opted, sanitized, and sold back to us as a trend, a commodity.
Nothing to be sold to people who haven't access to their money, and those who don't need it, don't you know...
The Parasite Class™ never stops selling to us and sometimes, they prefer their payment to be in the currency of obedience.
Too big for the parasites to begin with, not having thought it through the result of their plans are to kill the host to live the life of a railroad hobo. Or something. This plan will fail spectacularly.
I fully concur.

Ana, I will aim this word right back at ya: Beautiful!
Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts but, more importantly, thank you for being a role model of mindful, conscious parenting.
Parenthetically speaking,
I mights add...
Well...
We've heard it all before...
But, hear we go again:
YOU'RE FANTASTIC !
The Ivy covered crowds roar !
Out-loud & unabashedly.
But soothingly.
To Healer You, Dr. Z.
Rest Well too !
Always.
You are far too kind, Paul. I'm just trying to do my part. You know, Paul Revere-style!
I JUST got/read

What a wonderful essay! Reminds me of the words of Kahlil Gibran which go something like this:
"They deem me mad because I will not sell my days for gold. And I deem them mad because my days do not have a price."
I love your Stack, Mickey!
Thank you for your kind words and such a amazing comparison, Katherine! 🙂

Just curious, does the publisher still own the rights, or do you? And if they do, for how long?
In my case, the rights reverted back to me.
Glad to hear it.
