Five or six years ago, I posted some of Truman's nastier nuclear weapon sentiments on FB, as well as the some of the military leaders' disagreements. One of my acquaintances—who I know in-person—got very upset. Her father had considered Truman a hero. But the record speaks for itself, res ipsa loquitur. The real account is consistent with previous, intentional atrocities.
My first book was an alternative history of WWII and I also learned how upset folks get when the "greatest generation" is questioned.
Your comment reminds me of something Studs Terkel said in 1995, on the 50th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings:
“Why did we drop the bomb? So little Harry could show Molotov and Stalin we’ve got the cards. That was the phrase Truman used. We showed the goddamned Russians we’ve got something and they’d better behave themselves in Europe. That’s why it was dropped. The evidence is overwhelming. And yet you tell that to 99 percent of Americans and they’ll spit in your eye.”
My 90 year old father became incensed when I told him that FDR knew about the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese code had been broken shortly before the attack. Case in point: the aircraft carriers were safely away from the harbor; considered the most important ships of the Pacific fleet. Peace
You're dead on, my friend. I've written a fair amount about Pearl Harbor and you may have inspired me to post something here in the near future (or just wait for Dec. 7).
The US Brass(Washington, The Pentagon) is never far away from human experimentation; in this case atomic weaponry on civilians. Also implied is the show of force to the the communist Soviet Union(which Hitler was supposed to defeat, BTW).
Recent case in point: The COVID-19 pandemic.
To this day Russia is still in the Brass' desire for 'regime change'--ridding the world of Putin whose desire to rid the threat of the neo-Nazis next door in Ukraine. Nonplussed, the US just wants the continuation of slaughter of Europeans via Zelensky, the comedian that feeds the grinder of US imperialism. Its pathology, sadly, continues unabated. I'm thoroughly sick of it all. Peace, The Ol' Hippy
The 'Nam protests didn't work--protests in general look good on TV and not much else. Maybe a giant magic wand to rid Earth of psychopathic individuals. I am a disillusioned dreamer that still have a (very) few dreams of world peace.
Thanks Mickey for this sobering account - did you see the recent NYC nuclear preparedness PSA that makes light of a nuclear exchange? - Many say we are closer now than ever to such a catastrophic stupid evil, and yet the media ignores it all...

I'm thoroughly sick of it, too. If only all the "thoroughly sick of it all" would team up to change things!

I hear you, John, and was not talking about standard activism.
A disillusioned dreamer might be well-positioned to see past the paradigm.

Thanks, Will, and yeah...I saw the PSA. Whether they're foolishly toying with oblivion or just adding the fear matrix, these scumbags never stop.
I came to this same conclusion just days before I read this article. Thanks for that info.
Thank YOU for your open mind and for reading my stuff!
