I dunno, I think there is more to it than men controlling the terms of what qualifies as a genius.
I think that to be a genius in any field you need a certain monomaniacal quality to your personality that I suspect is more prevalent in the male population.
“I think that to be a genius in any field you need a certain monomaniacal quality to your personality that I suspect is more prevalent in the male population.” Interesting interpretation of what is required to be considered a (so-called) “genius”. Personally, I would rather be considered (generally) intelligent and wise and benevolent than I would enjoy being considered a genius in a (specified) disciplinary field.
This is curious to me. You rarely if ever comment here and never bothered to become a paid subscriber. I can't remember that last time you even liked a post of mine. But here you are: fully invested in...what exactly?
What's your point? That men don't control the perception of what is or isn't genius? That we shouldn't challenge long-held beliefs and make sure they stand the test of time? That women can't or don't want to be geniuses?
Why do you suddenly care enough about Post-Woke or what I write about standards of genius to comment this many times on this random post?
I am having a dull morning at work. I saw this post and it piqued my interest.
Apologies for not being a paid subscriber. I pay for several blogs I like but I can't afford to pay for everything.
But fine, if my comments are not welcome I will unsubscribe.
I am quite surprised at how angry you are about my mild challenge to be honest. I never said that I don't think your hypothesis is correct. I DO agree that men have controlled who gets prizes. But I also think other factors may be a part of it.
Your comment about me not bothering to become a paid subscriber sounded angry.
And another clarification. I tried to comment on your articles before but it was for paid subscribers only. So I didn't bother trying to comment for a while. I was surprised that I was allowed to comment on this one.
And...the way you set it up with the quip about male tears....it sounded like you were anticipating and inviting a lively debate.
“I DO agree that men have controlled who gets prizes [for being geniuses]. But I also think other factors may be a part of it.” It would be fun, adventurous, interesting, worthwhile to explore some of these “other factors”, no?
I really have no clue as to what the purpose of this earth life is. Maybe it’s to learn, to gain knowledge, to pass this knowledge on to future generations, so that future generations can create a better world than the one we are inhabiting presently. Maybe this life is a test. It’s a pass-fail test. One only passes the test if one has spent his or her entire lifetime preparing to meet his or her Maker. Maybe if one fails the test, one gets reincarnated. If I fail, I hope that I can return as a woman. It grieves me to think how badly men have behaved, when it comes to this current social order.
A turning point for me on this was reading about the construction of the Gregorian 12 month calender. A professor showed a stone tablet from ancient times which had markings in 28 day increments. He said this was "man's first use of the calendar system." MAN's first use? What sex would be interested in marking increments in 28 day counts?
In my experience, girls who are homeschooled do much better in STEM studies, and the tests that measure intellectual potential/capacity, than girls in regular schools. They don't learn that they're not supposed to be good at them.
nobel prizes are no grade of genius IMO. I consider the mothers of old, with 8 and 10 and more children and no washing machines, no microwaves, only a stove and with a little luck, a fridge, a genius. I want to see a man do the household like that. The worst case of nobel prize is Nurse Budwig, later Dr, who developed the Budwig protocol - her boss got the nobel prize, even though she was proposed several times in the 1930s. How many scientists got nobel prizes for something developed by females in their labs? I also remember the females behind the Apollo project, mathematicians. Did they ever get a prize?
Just imagine if women had written the algorithms for search. I doubt we'd find ourselves in such a rigid hierarchical system that demands we dumb everything down and ranks for things over thought or experience. Imagine...
Genius is just the biggest thing that fits in the box. The box was made to fit men. I honestly think that women should come up with a whole system that fits them. But women have to come up with it. Men would just build it to fit men. For instance, women’s sports are just women performing activities designed by men. How can they expect to ever perform at the highest level in something not designed for or by them?
The thing that chills me as a feminist is how many women achieve power by emulating the worst qualities of privileged men, including embracing their inner sociopath.
How about female tears in the comments?

So, it's the "boys being boys" excuse again?
Do you think there are any psychological differences between males and females at the population level?
I just posted this essay which highlights several of them.

Me too. But that could be because I'm a woman.

Thank you for your clarifications but why do you assume you're not welcome or that I'm angry?

Very interesting, James, and not at all surprising. 🎯
And yet women do better than men at every educational level. Even in STEM subjects.

Completely agree.

AMEN to every single word, George. Thank you!
