What Hurricane Helene can teach us about algorithms & discernment

Alicen Grey

, lives in North Carolina and is currently going through some serious struggles in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. When I search “news” outlets and “social” media to learn more, I’m inundated with horrific headlines designed to maximize fear.

When I get the rare chance to communicate with Alicen, sure, things are bad but her on-the-ground anecdotes tell a far more nuanced and complex story — complete with upbeat updates. 

There’s a huge lesson here, folks…

The Powers That Shouldn’t Be™ have created a system by which they can herd us into easily manageable tribes. Algorithms make sure that our posts get stuck in echo chambers. People rant and rave about “waking” people up and spreading “awareness.” In reality, they’re preaching to a tiny group of the already converted.

We don’t see what we’re not meant to see. We can’t reach who (we claim) we want to reach. This goes for all of us — on every point of the ideological spectrum.

For example, by design, the so-called “truthers” only see negative snippets about the so-called “woke” crowd — and vice-versa. Both “sides” willfully take such clickbait as fact and thus expend lots of energy to judge and hate “the other.” 

The Powers That Shouldn’t Be™ have been using such tactics for a long time but — thanks to pride and fear — these techniques continue to be effective. 

All of the above explains why you don’t see me ranting about trickery like elections, wars, border security, celebrity news, The Jab™, WEF, and so on. Two big reasons:

• Firstly, Substack’s algorithm guarantees I would only be singing to the choir anyway.

• More importantly, even if I reached every human on earth, none of the information I could share about current events would change anyone’s mind until they first change their hearts.

Even when it’s not obvious, my posts are about all of us eschewing pride, virtue signaling, and doom-scrolling. Until we look within and identify our role in this diabolical reality, we’ll remain part of a circular firing squad.

Meanwhile, The Parasite Class™ expands its sinister control and evil agenda.

It’s no surprise that I have but a tiny fraction of the readers as the popular, clickbait Substackers. Most of us like to be right [sic] more than we value introspection, discernment, humility, and… actual progress.

So, as I wrap up this public service announcement, I ask you to pray for Alicen, her cat, and everyone suffering due to the storm. 

Also, I ask you to stop imagining that your minuscule group of “dissidents” is challenging the status quo. The Powers That Shouldn’t Be™ aren’t threatened by either “queers for Gaza” or a “medical freedom movement.”

Let’s stop squandering time with repetitive, self-congratulatory circle jerks. Instead, let’s please allocate our divine energy to do necessary, non-stop inner work while also actually helping the humans and non-humans within our reach.

Society™, as we know it, is a ploy.

However, this all changes when we as individuals choose to evolve.
