What all these Substack posts and comments won't accomplish
(the only change you can control is within you)
This past week, I took some time to peruse a few popular Substacks to see what they’re up to.
As expected, there was plenty of outrage about men pretending to be women in the Olympics. Such exhibitionist rants do nothing to help women but can raise the profile (and perhaps the income) of the authors.
In addition, I saw Trump, Kamala, and RFK Jr. getting the usual attention in predictable and fruitless ways. None of it will impact the outcome in November but post-election, the same people will casually shift to non-stop content “informing” us what the outcome “means.”
Also, there’s still plenty being said about vaccines and who “died suddenly.” And, of course, there’s the full-time, self-anointed job of virtue signaling about Gaza.
We’re going on four years with the jabs and 10 months since October 7. All this “research” and “outrage” isn’t changing policies or touching people’s hearts in a way that inspires introspection, solidarity across ideological lines, original thought, and productive action.
Substack posts like the ones I describe above — and the inevitable, time-consuming comment threads they provoke — only contribute to further polarization and therefore, the continuation of the puppet show that gets everyone so riled up and distracted.
Imagine if instead, we rejected algorithm-created mantras and “opinions” and detached from the bread and circuses. What if we stop worrying about being right [sic] on the internet and ask ourselves why we believe what we think we believe?
What triggers you and why — and how attached to those triggers are you?
How can we connect to our deeper selves to discover the values and viewpoints that aren’t being manipulated and manufactured from the outside?
What will it take to seek common ground with at least some of the people we’re conditioned to reflexively despise?
As they typically stand now, as with Facebook, X, etc., all these Substack posts and comments will not inspire the sovereignty, critical thought, community, and authentic change we need.
A small group of folks will profit (including some clever Substackers) while the rest gleefully chase the red cape instead of the matador.
Innumerable people allocate innumerable hours to dismissing this one as a “sheep” while elevating that one as a “leader.”
Imagine if even half of that time was used to do the inner work needed to attain our most incredible, divine potential.
Visualize just one-tenth of that time being used not to dive into yet another rabbit hole about The Jab™ or The Election™ or whatever — but instead, to plan and implement sustainable ways to bring joy, freedom, and relief into the lives of those in need. (We obviously have the time and energy.)
You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one…
