Thoreau inspired me when I was a young teen. I still hold him in high regard. I've struggled, though, to find others who were similarly inspired. Most people can't walk a picket line alone. I completely understand. It can be scary and isolating.
I concur. Thoreau's legacy is most often connected to "environmentalism" these days. The only time his thoughts on civil disobedience are approved is when associated with MLK one day a year. It's not hard to imagine why an educational system would dissuade students from learning how to walk a picket line alone.

Good point! I've met teachers who are willing to risk curious, independent minds, but not many administrators. They want compliance.
