The N95 respirators work well for short periods of time—but only for short periods, and they need to be tossed as soon as they're wet. The protection is real, but highly limited. They're also uncomfortable. Extended wear is painful.
I've used the ported version, which is much easier to breathe through. But even the ported version is hard to wear for extended periods. They *all* restrict breathing. They also all muddy speech. That's a no-no in classrooms.
A positive pressure rig would be very effective and easier to cope with over long stretches. Once they're dialed in, they can be reasonably comfortable, but I doubt it's possible to teach while wearing one.
Mask mandates, especially for kids, tap into the angry, vindictive sanctimony of the bien pensant. They already see their kids as extensions of their social persona, so any crackpot virtue-signalling scheme gets their approval. It's lagniappe for them when, e.g. with masks and other petty cruelties, they get to afflict other people's kids. They wallow in it. You can argue the facts with them, but to no avail. This is their moment for melodrama and anal sadistic spasms. They're loving it.
