Thank you, as always, this is something I’d not considered from that point of view. My wife had mentioned how she doesn’t like our parking garage at night, I never really understood what difference it made. Feeling a little thick headed all of a sudden.

that is another scary place! Just like large parking lots, like Walmart and some shopping strips. I never go there in the dark, and even try to avoid all going out into town after dark. Here in the woods, I have one or 2 flashlights and I know what to expect. A deer, a possum, bugs of course...

I can relate, my friend. There's always so much to learn but we're taking the steps!

Great point. When my husband died several friends in (small) town asked if I was not going to move into town instead of living alone here in the woods. I told them I never saw a deer with a gun. In the last few years, crime has mounted in small town and I am glad to live in the woods still.

I cannot even imagine living in a big town like NY and absolutely can agree with these women not used the stairwell (even though it would make great exercise)

NY should be the graffiti king town and maybe California the queen 😆 I was in NY in the 90s and graffiti was everywhere I can’t recall any scary stuff even though I had to travel the train early in the morning or sometimes late (im not saying isn’t dangerous) I probably was 18 or 19 when my uncle give me a knife for protection just in case I told me always keep my eyes open (pay attention) And also I have to agree I feel safer in the woods every now and then I see a fox, skunk or coyote without AR or AK 🤭😆

I hear you. NYC crime is very exaggerated and some graffiti can be true art. At the same time, it's important that we listen to each other as to what could be better and what role we can play.

I was in graf culture as a young person. Did murals, etc. wasn’t into “tagging” as much, because like you’ve underscored, it’s defacement of property. I like good tags, but 99% of all graffiti is crap and is ugly. Boy did it seen an uptick early in the panny. I thought it was cool at first, but I see the uncontrolled nature of it now and am ashamed of it. They don’t even have messages anymore, just fame-seeking. That’s not to say there isn’t a group of actual artists using spray paint today in ways that are truly inspiring—but that isn’t really graffiti anymore, it’s street art. It’s out of control now and it’s gone the way of hip hop—not something to be proud of.

Indeed, signs of chaos and ineffective control pose threats. Good job nudging this into the zeitgeist.

I love this post! The fears women live with - all the damn time (not that I allow them to cripple me - I don't!) - are so often entirely invisible to men. I'm so glad you asked your client a simple question that wound up really illuminating something important for you. And that now you've shared it with all of us. Muchas gracias!!
