Mate ,the masses here are more interested in the Rugby, Rugby League, Aussie Rules, Soccer & Cricket than basic humanity. They tune out from reality because they'll need to think & I think it scares them. Sad but true, I've got mates I've known for over 50 years who still haven't grown up.

That aside, I hear you, Roc. The distraction machines are well-honed and designed to stunt our intellectual/spiritual growth. Competition reigns over compassion. We have our work cut out for us.
of course we are all conditioned. We are conditioned from birth, first by parents, then by schools, friends, work, until we die. I think it was Martin Buber who wrote that you have to un-condition before you can find who you are. But is that even possible? Of course the suicide of that one man won't change a thing. Even the collective suicide of thousands of men and women fighting a war doesn't change a thing. Look at history, billions of deaths and what has changed? not a thing! The rich are getting rich and the poor are starving, just like it ever was. I consider that we are no different from animals but for our minds, trying to find reason for what is going on. May be it would be better to live our lives just like animals do, just for the heck of it. I have been scolded before idealizing the animal world, but in my eyes, the human world is way worse!

indeed, it is a constant job. thanks to articles like yours I too find more conditioning! Ideas stuck there, that we don't realize they are. It does not help, that it is really hard to find any true information. Because what is true? most is biased, so we have to weigh what to believe, if anything!
