Great story. Interesting you should use "Mayor". When I lived in Pittsburgh in the ethnic neighborhood of " Polish Hill", if there was an older guy who knew EVERYTHING that was going on in the neighborhood including all the gossip they were called "the mayor of"... Dobson street, for example.
My first dog was an old lady beagle whose doghouse at her previous home was found to contain plates from many neighbors who had set out food for her -- she's wasn't chonky but chunky!
My dog's name was Miss Penelope and she took digitalis every day -- after having a heart attack at the age of two -- until my vet took her off it. When my mother and I went to Asia, we left her at a farm and the farm family told us she'd have to stay outdoors. Hahahaha! Needless to say, she stayed indoors with the family. I still feel terrible about the ways in which I let her down (I was just a kid) and I still beg her forgiveness (I beg forgiveness in my prayers from everyone I let down; come to think of it, they are all four-leggeds.)
Yes, they are amazingly forgiving. And phenomenally patient. I just had to euthanize my German shepherd and I told her I would have given her my legs, as damaged as they are, if I could have. Her dysplasia got so bad it was painful to see, but she would have just kept going because her heart was so BIG. I feel her presence constantly and now she is watching over me instead of vice versa. She had such a hard life -- backyard breeding, endless puppies, horrible pain when she was picked up off the Memphis streets, no human connection which is what GSDs live for, obviously physically abused and maybe sexually abused -- but she had five good years here of lots of love, walks in the woods, and the best food imaginable. Took six months to attach to me, but she never let go after that.
My son befriended (and began feeding) a feral cat.
Took awhile, but little by little, this male cat grew to trust him.
By leaving the patio door open, the cat began to poke his nose inside the ground floor apartment now and then, after having a nibble of kibble.
By leaving his bedroom window open a skosh, during winter, this feral cat began leaping into his room on cold snowy days. He'd take his leave again at dawn.
It took a year or even longer, but eventually, this feral cat became my (allergic to cats) son's beloved fur boy.
I have cat allergies as well, but became friends with him too. (They both lived with me for 3.5 months when my son was "between homes".)
Mr. Fuzz and my boy are together still. Attached at the hip, almost 8 years after he first showed up.
Wish I could post a photo: Mr. Fuzz looks a lot like Chonky! 😁
Very glad to know that Chonky has such good and loving neighborhood friends.
A Street Cat Named Bob is a 2016 British biographical drama film directed by Roger Spottiswoode and written by Tim John and Maria Nation. It is based on the book of the same name and The World According to Bob by James Bowen. The film stars Luke Treadaway, Ruta Gedmintas, Joanne Froggatt, Anthony Head, and Bob the Cat as himself. The film premiered in London on 3 November 2016, followed by a general release the next day. The title is a spoof of A Streetcar Named Desire.
Maybe Chonky's hiatus was him out cleaning up the streets from all the sewer rats that were reported to have taken over during lockdowns. He looks like he seen some things. Eyes of a warrior.

Thanks, David! That's sort of where I got the phrase, too! Living in urban neighborhoods my whole life has led me to cross paths with many "mayors"!
Years ago, a person on my block who I don't know told me that my cat Cheeky was known as "the mayor of Richardson Street."
😻😻😻😻
The Honourable Chonky is clearly the best leader we could ever hope to have. May his reign be peaceful and prosperous!
😻😻😻😻
Love it 😻 I have a neighbors dogs that he visits everyone 👅 🐾🐾

What was her name? 🐶
And btw, "chonky" is just internet-speak for "chunky"!
I didn't know about chonky!

Aw, thanks for sharing! My sister had a cat named Miss Penelope many years ago!
And that's sweet about your prayers. I feel certain that those four-legged angels have long forgiven you. They know plenty about grace!

😭
I can imagine the grief you feel, Susan, but what a blessing you and she brought into each other's lives for 5 years. Sending love and hugs to you.
What was her name?
I can't wait to meet him next time I visit! 😍
Absolutely! I was just getting to know him around the time of your recent visit but next time, he is up at the top of the priority list! 😻
Awww. ❤
