Your writing grabbed me. Good read.

My hometown of Kansas City has a mob history. In fact a mob boss names Pendergast controlled the city for something like 40 years.

Watch the movie Kansas City, directed by Robert Altman if you haven’t seen it.

Pittsburgh had ethnic neighborhoods. When we moved to Washington, the Sopranos were on the air. Some friends mentioned it and said we should watch it. We answered nah, we already saw that stuff in real life.

Thanks for writing this. My favorite aspect is how your father, through his first-hand experience, didn’t see members of organized crime as heroes. I’ve always detested how many movies/TV shows glorified them.

You're welcome and thank you.

Since the powers that shouldn't be are essentially global mobsters, it feels as if we're conditioned to find that kind of behavior charming and even honorable.

Did he ever tell you what the best of the movies left out? Not mad, but ya kinda left us hanging, there! Great story anyway.

That was his style. A man of few words so yeah, he left us all hanging!

Thanks, Brian!

You are lucky to have gotten so much of the story from your dad! That was a wonderful gift he gave you and your respectful interest that you gave him.

Thank you, Elise, for such a kind and meaningful response.

An even more interesting story might be "why" your Dad was so reticent to talk about his life.

So happy for you, Mickey. I had a really lousy one, but ... I sure learned some important lessons from him!

It breaks my heart how many times I hear such stories, Janet. May we humans move forward more intentionally to finally and permanently break this cycle.
