They were hissing evilly, how he could imagine such reality?!! ~~turns my stomach even years later. Wow! So very sorry for the harassment and resulting discouragements. Yes my own community demanded our security be masked, even while riding their golf carts, alone! Wonder they weren’t found flat out on the street unable to breathe in our Phx heat. The lockdowns flattened my own brain and memory of specific “when did that happen” abilities. And a wonderful Thai restaurant as well as so many others closed down. Losses of talents and income staggering. It’s sickening how many followed the leaders without questioning.
I had a stern talk with myself at the tail end of 2022. I decided that however wise and cynical and correct I might be (haha!), I needed to focus on joy.

Well said. It's all too easy and so very dangerous to poison oneself with resentment, victimhood, doom-mongering, etc. Nothing ever comes of that but sickness and failure. There's a poem I go to, now and then, that helps me get past any beckoning misery. It's a beauty.
I find optimism to be a religious perspective. My mother actually got upset when Desmond Morris wrote his book The Naked Ape; though she had rejected religion it was so deeply imbedded in her that she was disturbed by the notion of humans as naked apes (which is all we are).
I prefer the perspective of the MINISTER who started Post-Doom. He doesn't wallow in optimism or pessimism, he wants to face the future grounded and centered while realizing it does not bode well for his children and grandchildren (which has got to be far more difficult than for those of us who are childless). I see false optimism as just another delusion that humans can seemingly not live without, and those who go on and on about optimism seem to be trying to convince themselves.

I am neither optimistic nor pessimistic. I chose to face reality, in both its horror and beauty, and this may be because I started reading Buddhist philosophy as a teenager. There are few human statements as profoundly true as "Neither hope nor fear alters the seasons." When one is truly centered, one needn't indulge oneself with optimism (which seems closely related to the sugary sweetness of inspirational messages), one just keeps putting one foot in front of the other trying to do one's best in the world.
