Homework assignment: Write your own psalm

(inspired by a homeless man I help)

I’ve told you a little about Billy, a homeless man I’ve helped for years, who is undergoing a miraculous transition:

My mission: donations are VERY slow, but my efforts continue to plant seeds that blossom

Well, most recently, he told me about a weekly Bible class he is attending. More specifically, Billy shared his homework assignment: Write your own psalm. Best of all, he showed me the psalm he wrote.

It was an awesome blend of an old-school psalm and a New Testament epistle, and it inspired me to write my own psalm, too. I directly used many of God’s words to compile this:

I receive Your mercy and grace as the love I do not deserve

Your yoke is easy

I wear Your forgiveness as an eternal hedge of protection

Forgiveness granted to a prodigal son — assuring me that despite the wickedness I’ve embraced, no weapon formed against me or my loved ones will ever prosper

Your burden is light

You are my rock, my fortress, my vindicator

Your favor is my shield

My crooked places are made straight

In You, I’ve found rest unto my soul

If I seek, I shall find; if I ask, I shall receive — exceedingly and abundantly

The windows of heaven are open, and blessings pour out; my cup runs over

Your cross has redeemed my Edenic powers — ensuring that, if I pick up my cross, I will lend and not borrow

I will be above, never below

With mustard-seed faith, I soar on wings like eagles

Alongside the meek, I will inherit the earth — with full authority over all the power of the enemy

My wounds are healed, my strength is renewed

Goodness and mercy chase me down as You deliver me from all my fears

I am surrounded by Your angels as You do what only You can do!

I put on Your full armor; I am in agreement with You

I take refuge in You; Your praises are always on my lips

I shall not want
