helping vulnerable people during a heat wave
Plus: new church photos!
As I prepare to do my best to help others during a Big Apple heat wave (see temperatures above), it feels like a good time to discuss this scenario.
If the weather is challenging for you, it’s likely a nightmare for those living outside. They need whatever support we can provide.
As always, it begins with a friendly introduction and a question like, “I’d like to help; what can I do for you?”
That said, you almost can’t go wrong with giving them a cold bottle of water, a sun hat, an umbrella to block the sun, wet wipes, and other heat wave essentials. If you’re someone who spends a lot of time driving, it’s useful to keep such items in your car — just in case.
As you know, I’ve learned that restaurant gift cards are universally appreciated. This approach gives folks a way to get a break from the elements, have a meal, use the bathroom, charge their phones, and generally feel like they fit in for a little while.
But again, it’s best not to make too many assumptions. They’ll tell you what they need if you’re willing to bridge the gap and ask.
Also, if they have an animal with them, get very specific directions as to what that cat or dog prefers and requires. Your support can make all the difference in the world.
Thank you, everyone, for leading by example.
(Does anyone have other suggestions they’d like to share?)

Are there any shelters for the homeless, where they can have some cool ? I remember hereabouts they have a few. Also, our library has a large foyer where they can sit, and load their phones. In the Atlanta area there are several places like this, that offer warmth in winter and cool in summer.
Love that St John Nepomuk with the beautiful blue ceiling - the third church like that!
