Among the many trends that kicked in during the pandemic [sic], I’ve encountered plenty of New Yorkers now relying on crime-tracking apps to get their hourly hit of apprehension and dread.
Even though regional crime was worse in the past (I recently wrote about that here), residents stay tuned to free apps like “Citizen.” I recall speaking to a local barber in 2021 and having him insist — based solely on his non-stop monitoring of apps — that my neighborhood of Astoria was now a hotbed of lawlessness.
He was far from the only person making such an assessment. I tell such people that we simply didn’t know what was happening before phones and apps. But now, thanks to 24/7 notifications, we have the illusion of ever-present danger.
Such analysis is greeted with hostility every single time.
Pro tip: Humans don’t like you when you appear to be threatening their dopamine supply.
I’d like to create my own free app.
Those who downloaded it would get word every time someone helped a blind person cross the street, gave a few bucks to a homeless person, fed the local stray cats, or held a door open for a senior citizen.
The notifications would ring out whenever a new poem was written, a song was composed, or a beautiful pirouette was performed within a two-mile radius of your location.
You’ll be kept up to date on goals attained and dreams coming true. Every parent who spoke love over their children and told them they are proud of them. Each time someone chose faith over fear.
And if your phone makes a sound like church bells, it would signal that someone in your vicinity just had a prayer answered.
I might call such an app The Miracle Monitor™.
Keep in mind: From CEOs to Substackers and beyond, a whole lot of folks wanna frighten you into compliance of some sort.
The good news is that such manipulation is rendered impotent by sovereign thought. In fact, it can become quite comical.
So, if you notice that anyone is utilizing scare tactics on you, it’s safe to assume that they’re looking to increase and exploit your anxiety.
Respond accordingly…
