Orcas are apex predators. Therefore, they hunt and kill a wide range of species on a regular basis. When humans first witnessed such behavior, they unironically anointed the largest members of the Delphinidae family with the moniker “killer whale.”
I say unironically because firstly, orcas aren’t even whales (they’re dolphins). But more importantly, below is a snapshot of worldwide human culture today — not even counting 800,000 annual suicides.
Each year, on average:
100,000 deaths caused by war, military interventions, terrorism, etc.
500,000 homicides
Possibly as many as 1 million deaths are caused by medical “interventions”
9 million preventable poverty/hunger-related deaths (including one child every 10 seconds)
Plus: Estimates vary, but perhaps as many as 50,000 animal and plant species become extinct each year — often due to human activities. That’s over 130 per day, about six per hour, and just about one species per minute.
More specific to this comparison: Thanks to human behavior, about 90 percent of the large fish in the oceans are gone.
As far as we know, no orca is to blame for mass extinctions, drone warfare, untested pharmaceuticals, overfishing, or food “shortages.”
Translation: Until we learn to stir up our gifts — to consistently follow fundamental prompts like love your neighbor and your enemy — I suggest we dub humans “killer primates” and leave orcas alone.
Let’s start doing better — every day in every way. We have the power. It’s high time we start using it for good.

so true. animals mostly kill for food. humans kill for whatever true or absurd reason. no war can be justified. it is always the small people that suffer. why can't we do without a government? who came up with that stupid idea ! must be a human ! wolves and elephants other animals live in tribes too, but that is for survival. Yes nature can be cruel too, but not the way of people. I remember the place where we used to go on vacation, where a little valley had been made into vacation homes. Before there were lovely wild orchids. The vacation house owner had destroyed all the natural habitat and now had pots with geraniums, just like in his home apartment... all the orchids were gone. I cried.
"Killer primates". Has a nice ring to it.
We also must be aware, as I know you are, that things are only bad when the other side, or another species, does them...
