In 1908, The Times of London asked a wide range of noted writers to pen an article in response to the question: “What is wrong in the world today?”
The English author and philosopher, Gilbert Keith “G.K.” Chesterton replied with the one-line “essay” pictured above:
“I am.”
It was neither satire nor delusion.
Chesterton, a renowned thinker, adherent of distributism, and man of God, was certainly not someone you’d reflexively blame for the diabolical nature of human culture. However, he understood that there are no innocent (adult) bystanders when assessing societal sins.
How comforting it is to blame the “state of the world” on the usual suspects — according to how you’ve been conditioned to see things.
But it’s far more accurate and helpful to swallow your pride and gaze into the mirror when asked “What is wrong in the world today?”
Remember that Paul, who converted from murderer to apostle and ended up writing about half of the New Testament advised:
“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners — of whom I am the worst.” (1 Timothy 1:15)
