As regular visitors here know, I write a lot about the scourge of doom scrolling. This time around, I’m gonna take a tangential angle.
The tendency when consuming pessimistic content is to, in turn, become an avatar of negativity. Such a cycle has a detrimental impact on everyone involved.
To consistently choose doom scrolling is to breed more of it. In Biblical terms, it involves the process of “defiling” yourself — as explained here in Mark, chapter 7:
14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”
17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)
20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come — sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”
Whether or not you resonate with Scripture excerpts, there’s nothing neutral about your digital diet. Choosing to dwell in fear, dread, resentment, conflict, and paranoia will not generate the positive creative energy we all need to contribute toward favorable, sustainable change.
Pay close attention to your consumption habits. Just as importantly, maintain an acute awareness of the words you speak or write and the internal frequency at which you communicate with others.
Sinister forces very much want us to lose sight of the intrinsic power we wield 24/7. So, keep in mind that the difference between being part of the problem and part of the solution can be very subtle.
Respect and protect the power of your output.
Yes, we must acknowledge and challenge the forces of evil but do so without allowing their existence to snuff out your desperately needed inner light.
