some truly important things happened this week
(e.g. a blend of nightmares & blessings for one of my regulars)
It took longer than expected but with some material support from a few of you generous souls, I’ve gotten Faven a new phone (see above photo). She asked me to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who supports my mission (especially T).
That said, yesterday also brought Faven some very bad news. Early in the morning, a young man violently robbed her of a giant bag that contained virtually everything she owned. He physically assaulted her and knocked her to the sidewalk; she’s lucky to be alive.
That’s the update I got as I walked up about an hour after the crime — with her new phone.
The money I had previously given her to activate the phone was gone.
Her clothes (except for what she was wearing) are gone.
Her passport and ID (that she worked so hard to get last month) are gone.
So, it was an emotional blend of progress and setbacks. I did what I could for her on the spot. After she shared all the details, I listened with compassion. Then, I went to the nearest ATM and took out my own money so she could activate the phone and purchase a Metrocard for all the subway stops she’d have to make. I also gave her a McDonald’s gift card so her meals were covered for yesterday.
Still, I need help ASAP to get some basics back in her life until she can turn things around and get started again.
Meanwhile, through it all, Faven expressed so much gratitude for the phone. Despite the nightmarish setback, the phone will lay the groundwork for her to successfully visit a local drop-in center ASAP where she can:
Take a shower
Do her laundry
Eat a hot meal
Get physical or mental care if she needs it
Apply to get housing
Start the processes of job training and job hunting
Do me a favor and re-read that list. Do you realize how HUGE this is?
Imagine going to bed every night knowing how big of a difference you’re making in the lives of vulnerable souls like my friend Faven.
Thanks to folks like you, she can soon be living indoors, earning steady money, feeling safe, and getting the care she needs!
This is just part of the work I’ve been doing for 8-plus years and it’s what YOU can subsidize with a donation right now.
The holidays are coming and so is the cold weather. I need you more than ever.
Faven needs you more than ever.
It would be awesome if you could step up and help today.
I have every intention of expanding my work but I can’t do this alone. If you want to play a role in creating more success stories, please check out the links below.
