Above is a photo I took of Laura D. today near Union Square Park. I met Laura when I first started my project of 6-plus years, Helping Homeless Women - NYC. She was living on the street and soon became one of my “regulars.” Whenever I’d stop by to give her supplies or gift cards, we’d have epic conversations and soon became friends.
Laura is an extremely talented artist and art teacher. She’s been able to get inside since the lockdowns but, as you can imagine, there’s a lot more work to be done to achieve the stability she’s dreams of.
I’ve continued to help Laura through all her efforts and she made me a painting to say thanks. She’s holding it in the photo above and yes, it reads “keep your guard up”! Here’s what Laura wrote on the other side:

Take-home message: I can’t end homelessness, poverty, or misogyny but I know I can offer the kind of relief and support that makes a difference in the lives of some vulnerable women.
