Remember when Wimbledon barred American players because the U.S. invaded a country?
(Yeah, me neither)
I just read that the All England Club will bar Russian tennis players from competing in Wimbledon this year because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.Â
Can you imagine if they — or anyone — ever got worked up about the dozens and dozens and dozens of nations the U.S. has invaded, bombed, overthrown, armed, or intervened in since the first Wimbledon tournament in 1877? Â
Spoiler Alert: There would be zero American tennis players with a Grand Slam victory under their belt.Â
Rollover, Sharapova… and tell Pete Sampras the news.Â
P.S. Just in case you’re wondering…Â
The U.S. currently maintains nearly 800 military bases in more than 70 countries and territories.
Russia has about 20 military bases in foreign countries.
China has one.
