The "left" or "right" on the political spectrum describes people's political orientations as to their ideological positions favoring ordinary people in contrast to the current and self-serving, ruling capitalist class. Left denotes people who resist the ruling class and the right are people who largely subscribe to and agree with the current ruling capitalist class. Capitalism is the form of rule which places private "owners" as all-powerful because they hold power from their accumulation of wealth from their control of the economy. Because the ruling class "owns" the mainstream media, this class uses the media to spread the ideology of capitalism.
In the past, we saw them using the private ownership (this means control under the rules of capitalism) of media to spread favorable reports of the capitalist system, but currently we see that the ruling class uses the media to spread false information about reality. They do this deliberately to confuse people and to manipulate their conceptions of reality.
I'm so glad you two are having this conversation. It's accessible and on target. I don't have to read the complete works of the Frankfurt School to understand it, and I don't need to worry about identitarian booby traps. Hopefully others also see the practical aspects and potential for more.
