Is Donald Trump the Doc Rivers of politics?
(I trust this title will make sense by the end of the post)
For the uninitiated, Glenn “Doc” Rivers is the current coach of the Milwaukee Bucks. For the extremely uninitiated, the Bucks are a professional sports team in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Then again, if you didn’t know any of that, I’m guessing the rest of this article might appear as incomprehensible as Ulysses.
Moving right along…
A man named Adrian Griffith was the Bucks’ coach before Rivers. Under Griffith’s stewardship, the Milwaukee Bucks were seriously underachieving despite being considered a championship contender.
During Griffith’s tenure, Doc Rivers was doing commentary on TV broadcasts of NBA games. Prior to that, he was let go by the Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers — two other NBA teams. Some might say Rivers was more hype than skill.
Eventually, Griffith was fired and Rivers was lured away from his TV job.
Dare I say he’s planning to make Milwaukee great again?
Today, Doc Rivers has the Bucks dribbling, passing, rebounding, and shooting. You’ll see a pick-and-roll, a zone defense, an outlet pass… basically you’ll see everything all the other teams are doing.
You see, it wouldn’t matter if the coach was Doc Rivers, Adrian Griffith, or even James Joyce because the Bucks are still playing the same game by the same pre-ordained rules.
The NBA does what it always does — referees blow their whistles, tickets are sold at increasingly higher prices, and players come and go. Again, despite a much-needed coaching change, the Bucks are still playing the same game by the same rules.
Thus — while there may be some winning, some losing, some new plays, some old plays, some trades, some free agent signings, and yes, some new coaches hired — to expect actual change under such fixed conditions is both illogical and delusional.
Unless the design is dismantled and the rules are changed, we’re rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
Hmm… maybe I should start a write-in campaign.
(more about that soon)
