Fake news, movies, commercials... you are being lied to about almost everything
The Society of the Spectacle
“Just as early industrial capitalism moved the focus of existence from being to having, post-industrial culture has moved that focus from having to appearing.” (Guy Debord, author of The Society of the Spectacle)
“The spectacle is not a collection of images, but a social relation among people, mediated by images.” (Guy Debord)
“In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all of life presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation.” (Guy Debord)
“Spectacle is the sun that never sets over the empire of modern passivity.” (Guy Debord)
This ends when we turn off our TVs, stop mindlessly scrolling our devices, and accept the undeniable reality that we have been lied to — 365/24/7 — for our entire lives.
We can’t even be sure why we believe what we think we believe. How many of your thoughts are even your own?
The enemy tells us what to fear, who to admire, who to hate, and how to live.
But, as the Situationists told us, we already know what we feel.
When we detach ourselves from the Powers That Shouldn’t Be, we can connect with our inherent, profound, supernatural powers.
Reminder: You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
I Love that Bible verse! Thanks for shaking us awake Mickey. I’ve found myself heading into two and more minutes of hate session many days lately and have found it helpful to reel myself back in and recall it is all about control. I don’t need this propaganda, I refuse to have my emotions driven by narrative. I embrace my ornery self. Happy Friday!
Work by Guy Debord has been sitting on a shelf for over a year. This is a moment to open it. Thank you, Mickey Z.
