I told you a little about Kenny, one of my regulars here:
I also told you about celebrating the birthday of another regular, Anna, here:
Well, today is Kenny's 59th birthday. He’s gotten housing (a single room, to be exact) because of his disability but The System™ keeps threatening to take away that room — for bureaucratic reasons.
P.S. Kenny still must panhandle every day to have enough money to survive.
Reminder: Just because a homeless person gets a job does not mean they can afford housing. And just because a homeless person gets housing doesn’t mean they don’t have to panhandle.
When I asked Kenny if I could get him something for his birthday, he seemed unsure how to reply. I made a few suggestions and this inspired him to request cargo shorts. So, I combined that with a t-shirt to honor the neighborhood in which he panhandles:
Next, I inquired about getting him some kind of cake or dessert but he said he’s stopped eating sweets.
“I still like sandwiches,” he added. So, I instead got him a $25 gift card to Subway restaurant so he could pick out his own birthday treats whenever he chose.
Kenny’s a man of few words (partly, I assume, because his disability impacts his speech) but he made it quite clear that he was happy with his gifts. And if he’s happy, so am I!
I’m so grateful to be in the position to celebrate someone like Kenny on his birthday (and all the other days) — especially when I’m not sure how many others in his life might do so.
Before moving on, I asked Kenny: “What’s your biggest wish between now and your 60th birthday next year?”
Without hesitation, he replied: “That I get to keep my room.”
I ask all of you to please send sincere birthday wishes and prayers to my friend, Kenny. Allow your prayers to fill him, right now, with the clear awareness of minds and hearts lovingly aimed in his direction. May he feel less alone — more safe and more loved.
May the rest of his life be the best of his life…
