An automobile’s fuel pump sends fuel to the injectors through a series of hoses. When those hoses inevitably fail (planned obsolescence), gasoline leaks from the vehicle's undercarriage.
Gasoline is a mixture of about 150 different hydrocarbons, including butane, pentane, isopentane, and the BTEX compounds (benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylenes).
This toxic brew is hydrophobic (repelled by water). So, the fuel that has dripped floats in rainwater puddles as in the photo below.
When light is reflected off the oil in the gasoline, it will show a rainbow of colors in the puddle. Thicker parts of oil give off the blues and purples and the thinner parts give off the reds, pinks, and yellows.
I’ve written plenty over the decades about how Automobile Culture™ is an environmental catastrophe for all living things.
This time, I’ll instead ponder if the gasoline rainbow is God’s way of reminding us that even as man’s haughty attempts at creation cause noxious nightmares, we still could be living in a paradise on earth if we’d only choose to do so.
And then perhaps, we’ll truly have eyes to see…

As a friend of mine says, "Everything goes back to The Garden."
"I’ve written plenty over the decades about how Automobile Culture™ is an environmental catastrophe for all living things." I used to write about it too! It made me unpopular. I even lost an environment column in a smalltown newspaper I used to write for (while living in GM territory). Cars are a sacred cow in our culture. A very sacred cow.
